About

The mission of the Climate Justice League is to empower students to organize their communities and be leaders in the climate justice movement. By using targeted campaigns, we will work together toward a safe, just and sustainable future for all.

“You can make a big impact. At the end of the day, it’s not about your carbon footprint. It’s about your carbon-busting fistprint! It’s not your lifestyle, it’s your life’s work.” – Bernadette Del Chiaro (PowerShift West, Eugene OR)

What is Climate Justice?

How It All Began

The Climate Justice League was started by the organizers and attendees of PowerShift West to harness the energy and passion coming out of the conference. Organizational and planning meetings began almost right after PowerShift and the first CJL campaigns (Take Back the Tap and Show me Democracy) officially kicked off in winter term 2010 (January 19th).

The CJL is based off of the teachings of the Sierra Student Coalition‘s summer training program (SPROG).

Structure

The CJL is primarily organized by its campaigns. Each campaign has one or two campaign coordinators who are responsible for facilitating the campaign’s progress and communication. Campaigns will often choose to further organize into teams which can take on more specialized roles in each campaign. Teams are held accountable to team facilitators. The campaigns are fairly autonomous, with the CJL itself serving mostly as support, communication, and to create new campaigns.

To streamline a lot of the CJL’s decision-making, there is a steering committee made up of the co-directors, campaign coordinators, and the other coordinators (information, recruitment & retention, public relations and trainings coordinators, and the CJL ambassador).

CJL Bylaws

For worthwhile projects that may not be big enough or timely enough to warrant a full campaign, interested people form working groups. This lets the CJL use it’s resources as effectively as possible.
